How much should a gig driver set aside for taxes?

Gig platforms usually pay you without withholding tax, so the tax on your earnings is still owed later, either when you file or through estimated payments during the year in some countries. This calculator estimates how much to put aside from each quarter so a tax bill does not come as a surprise.

How this calculator works

Taxable profit is your earnings minus your expenses, or minus your distance times a mileage rate if you use one. Income tax is the taxable profit multiplied by your income tax rate, and social or self-employment tax is the taxable profit multiplied by that rate. The total is what to set aside for the quarter, and dividing by three gives a monthly figure.

Actual expenses or a mileage rate

Many tax systems let drivers deduct vehicle costs either by tracking actual expenses or by using a standard per-distance rate. Usually you choose one method for the vehicle, not both, so enter your expenses or your mileage rate, but not the same costs twice. The rules and rates differ by country and change over time, so check your local tax authority.

Choosing your rates

The default rates are placeholders. A better estimate is your effective rate from last year's return, which you can combine with any regional or state tax. If you are new to self-employment, an official tax calculator or an accountant can give you a more reliable figure.

Staying on top of it

Moving a share of each payout into a separate savings account makes the set-aside automatic. Keep a mileage log and your receipts as you go, and re-run this calculator each quarter with your real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay taxes quarterly?

It depends on your country and how much you expect to owe. Many places require estimated payments above a certain amount. Check with your tax authority.

Are tips taxable?

In general, tips count as income, so include them in your earnings.

What if my income changes a lot?

Run the calculator each quarter with the actual figures instead of relying on an earlier estimate.
